The Montana Republican presidential primary ballot will list Rocky De La Fuente, Bob Ely, and President Donald Trump. Candidates get on the ballot by submitting 500 signatures and a filing fee. Any registered voter can sign. Montana doesn’t have registration by party, so it has an open primary.
The Democratic ballot will list Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. The primary is June 2.
For U.S. Senate, there will be a contested Green Party primary between Wendie Fredrickson and Dennis Daneke. Thanks to Jim Riley for this news.
Hello Richard. Which other states do not have registration by party?
I know about half the states do not register by party. Some of them are Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, North Dakota, and Washington.
A few states have anonymous party affiliation, where a voter selects their affilation in the voting booth. In most of these states, the voter marks their party affiliation on the ballot. I think that is the case in HI, MI, MN, ND, and WI. WA doesn’t have party affiliation, but doesn’t have party nominations either. Party precinct officers are elected. A voter affiliates with a party by voting for one of the candidates.
MT may be unique in that it prints separate ballots for each party. Since ALL voters might select the same party, they produce enough ballots for every voter IF there is a contested nomination, or candidates filed for a majority of offices. At one time they messed up the wording of the law, and the SOS refused to print Libertarian ballots, even though they had a contested primary, and said that both candidates would be on the general election ballot.
In other states, there is not persistent affiliaion, but there is public affiliation. In Texas, a voter may only participate in nomination activities of a single party (primary, primary, and conventions), but the government grants absolution after each election cycle.
In Ohio, a voter may only switch at the general primary every two years. If you vote in the Democratic primary, you can’t sign a Republican petition, or even circulate one (a candidate is permitted to switch).
NOOOO extremist caucuses, primaries and conventions.
