Texas Republican Party Struggles to Hold Virtual State Convention

The Texas Republican Party tried to have its virtual state convention on Thursday, July 16, but could not handle the credentialing process. The party will try again on Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19. See this story. Thanks to Jim Riley for this news.

In fairness to the Republican Party, it had very little time to learn how to do an electronic convention. The city of Houston forced the city to abandon its in-person convention shortly before the scheduled date. The Texas Supreme Court sided with the city. The party could have held its in-person convention in another city but that would also have been a last-minute change.

  1. In reality to the Texas GOP, contra Richard’s “fairness,” it could have looked at Texas Democrats. Or Greens. Or, I believe, Libertarians. Or, Greens or Libertarians nationally. Or, possibly, state GOPs in other states. I know the Indiana GOP went online last month. http://indiana.gop/stateconvention

    No excuses.

  2. Only a few cities have the facilities large enough for a convention of this size. The deposit was paid in 2017. They did explore holding the convention outdoors under tents, but couldn’t figure out logistics for AC.

The George R Brown is huge. It could actually hold 6000 delegates with social distancing.

Technically, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that the case was a contract law case (the convention center operator invoked a force majeure clause) rather than an election law case which would bring in 1st Amendment, peaceable assembly issues.

AFAIK, the state Libertarian convention is still on for the end of this month. The Libertarian Party did get injunctive relief to change the date (state law prescribes the precise date for the convention-nominating parties). The party has to make its statewide nominations (US Senator, RRC, statewide courts).

  3. They have football, basketball and baseball stadiums in many parts of Texas right?

  4. How long has internet virtual stuff been around ???

    — since day ONE [by definition] ???

  5. “I’m sorry. What? Are you talking about even?”

    No. Odds.

  7. Well, your language appears to use English words but in random order that does not convey any meaning. Is there a different language that uses the same words as English but meaning something entirely different, so your word arrangements actually mean something?

  9. @Dennis,

Hotel rooms are also a consideration in choice of cities.

Jerry’s World or NRG stadium are more designed for audience than a convention. And with fixed sesting would be harder to maintain social distancing (every 3rd row, every 5th seat, etc)

But on the floor at the GRB you could have chairs set apart.

  10. Jum Riley how did you get your head upside down like that? I am not seeing anywhere I can turn my around, or sideways or anything else.
