Bill to Admit District of Columbia as a State Has 204 Co-Sponsors

HR 51, introduced January 4, 2021, would make most of the District of Columbia a state. As of January 9, it has 204 co-sponsors. The bill has been referred to two different committees. Generally when a bill gets assigned to a committee, that is a sign it is about to move ahead.

Bill to Admit District of Columbia as a State Has 204 Co-Sponsors — 34 Comments

  1. Bad idea. The Founders did not make DC, which actually came along several years after the Constitution, but it was still the founding generation, a stare for good reasons. There are even more reasons to not make DC a state today as it is a bastion of big government voters.

The only compromise I would consider would be to give part of DC back to Maryland.

  2. In the early days of the nation, persons residing in the District of Columbia were permitted to vote in Virginia or Maryland, but they lost that right after a few years. The U.S. is the only nation in the world that has elections, but in which adult citizens of the capital city have no voting representatives in the nation’s legislative bodies. There is no principle that justifies such treatment of residents of D.C. It is in violation of several human rights treaties and documents the U.S. has signed, starting in 1945.

  3. I would say no to DC and Puerto Rico as states. This would shift the balance of power too far to the left. Remember, the left wants to take your guns and eliminate, or severely limit, the 2nd amendment.

  4. REPEAL 23 AMDT –

ADD DC IS PART OF MD FOR ALL FED ELECTION PURPOSES – REPS / SENS / EC

IE EC DOWN TO 435+100 = 535 ODD NUMBER

MD LIKELY TO GET 1 MORE USA REP. AND EC VOTE.

  5. Just so we’re clear, any Senator that supports DC statehood is also supporting court packing, green new deal, and gun confiscation, among other things.

  6. There is no reason part of DC can’t be given back to Maryland. This would solve most of the problem.

  7. Fact Checker has it correct in the post above.

If the left gets their gun control agenda through, this country is dead. The totalitarian state will arise after this.

  8. District of communists should be kicked out of USA and build a wall around it. No foreign aid, no special favors. Kick out Puerto Rico too.

  9. Republicans have no imagination. This represents an opportunity to create new Red states by dividing up Texas, Florida, and/or Washington.

But, they should have thought of it BEFORE they lost their Senate majority. Again, they were a little bit too slow.

  10. We all believe in self-determination, don’t we? D.C. doesn’t want to be part of Maryland, and Maryland doesn’t want D.C. Don’t the people of D.C. and Maryland have a right to self-determination as to their status inside the U.S.?

  11. Much ado about nothing. Even assuming it gets to the Senate, that’s where it will die. Manchin and likely a few other democrats will vote nay.

  12. If they want self determination, how about DC secede from the USA and become its own country?

  13. If Manchin is the swing vote, maybe he can negotiate a deal to create two new Red states for DC and PR.

  14. No new states will be created this congressional term, the next one, or the one after that. D.C. and Puerto Rico will remain part of the USA and will maintain their current status, as will the other territories and possessions of the USA. No states will be broken up in that time frame, and most likely not for a good while after that.

  15. Manchin isn’t the only democratic nay vote. Sinema and probably a few more will also vote no.

  16. Actually, if you just added several counties in Northern Virginia to the new State of Columbia, most of what’s left to Virginia becomes more Republican. Again, the republicans are missing an opportunity. They have been too busy salving Trump’s ego.

  17. Congress has no authority to unilaterally expand D.C. Virginia would have to agree to give up any counties, which is very unlikely. The same would hold true of Maryland. It has no obligation to take D.C. back.

  18. Total control Dem large States may gerrymander divide to get more RED Commie Dem Senators and EC votes.

How much space in Capitol Bldg for more RED commie Dem Sens and Reps ???

More seats in Capitol Rotunda — get rid of citizen tourists ???

  19. DC was part of Maryland, and that’s where it should go. Winger doesn’t understand history.

  20. Maine was once part of Massachusetts. West Virginia and Kentucky were once part of Virginia. Eritrea was once part of Ethiopia. Many independent nations were once part of the Soviet Union. Bangladesh was once part of Pakistan. Pakistan was once part of India. Timor was once part of Indonesia. Just because a place was once part of a larger unit doesn’t mean it ought to go back to the old status.

  21. DC was never meant to be its own state. Winger needs to study real history instead of his communist propoganda.
West Virginia broke off and was admitted illegally, by the way.

    31 of 50 BELOW AVERAGE.

It shows in the blowhards minority rule Senate.

  23. Either give it back to Maryland or pass an amendment that grants the capital district and territories a voting representative and a non-voting senator.
