Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Abolish Electoral College Would Also Have Congress Set Ballot Access Rules for President

Congressmember Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee) has introduced his HJR 14, a proposed constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college. It says in section five that “Entitlement to inclusion on the ballot shall be determined by Congress.” Thanks to Thomas Jones for the link to HJR 14.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Abolish Electoral College Would Also Have Congress Set Ballot Access Rules for President — 26 Comments

  1. The is one reason that I oppose abolishing the electoral college. The federalization of the entire electoral process becomes inevitable. And, NO that is NOT a good thing. It would accentuate divisions even further, and could likely result in the break-up of the US.

  2. END the minority rule gerrymander EC.

HJR 14 – more standard fatal defects.

Congress statutory rigging of who would be Electors, ballot access and election dates.

NONPARTISAN election of execs/judics by APPV — pending Condorcet — RCV done right.
Specific election dates — as in most State Consts.

  3. If this passes, they’ll set the requirements so high that not even a miracle will get any party other than the Democrats and Republicans on the ballot for President in any state.

  4. This is an attempt from the left to tip the elections further in their favor, so they can further their welfare statist and gun control agenda. I would vote no on this bill if I were in Congress.

  5. Andy – minor

It is an Art V Joint Res.

    —–
States should be demanding a USA con-con — to get rid of the many FATAL defects-
    3 minority rule gerrymander systems
lack of more NONPARTISAN elected execs – USA SOS, AG, USA Marshals, USA Dist Attys
    appointed hack judges
    SOP violations

  6. The Democrats are leading the charge to eliminate the right to keep and bear arms. If they get their way on this, you can kiss any chance of have a libertarian, or even semi-libertarian, society, or any semblance of a civil society, good bye.

  7. It’s laughable that some people think a single national election with RCV would be better for our third parties than the current 51 state elections. They seriously need to stop their nonsense before they destroy all third parties through the nationalization of the ballot.

  8. To be clear, I support the parliamentary system, as it allows each region to have constant influence (through their congresspeople) rather than once every four years (if that state chooses the winning presidential candidate). If a third party wins a few seats for prime minister, they have more influence than a party that receives a few electors for president, but either way is better than this guy’s proposal.

  9. It would be better to keep the electoral vote and get rid of the popular vote. Go back to letting legislatures choose the college of electors as well as the Senate. As far as constitutional amendments a good start would be to repeal the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 26th amendments.

  10. Demo Rep, Approval Voting (AppV), is a one-party system in both single-winner election districts and in multiple winner election districts.

That’s because the biggest block always wins in single winner elections and with stragegizing by slate voting, the biggest faction can win a super majority and more.

One-party voting systems are no good because America is a melting pot.

No way to bogus AppV and no way to one-party and two-party voting systems.

  11. You may believe the US was totalitarian for nearly a century after the American revolution, but I don’t.

  12. The 13th amendment is a moot point at this juncture. The 18th and 21st cancel each other out. I don’t have a problem with the 25th. The others since the war of northern aggression have all been pernicious.

  13. NONstop ANTI-Democracy minority rule gerrymander systems in ALL States since 1776 —

ALL State legis / most local legis — exception — NONPARTISAN at large local legis [but deny 49.99 pct minorities any REAL rep.]

NONstop ANTI-Democracy minority rule gerrymander systems in USA Regime since 1789 —

    H Reps / Senate / EC.

Too many talking HEAD MORONS in Dumb City today and every day —

esp political hacks on CNN and TV networks.
    ——
    PR and APPV
    TOTSOP

  14. Um, retard, the Articles of Confederation was not even ratified until 1781. Demo Rep the RETARD needs to go back and review history.

  15. TO RETARD troll moron –

The 2 USA regimes in 1775-1781 and 1781-1789 had their own fatal defects re minority rule gerrymanders.

Just enough troll morons who can NOT read on this list due to their troll moron know-it-all one polisci brain cell in their troll moron thug skulls.

How many Trump 6 Jan 2021 thugs / invaders have been arrested so far ???

Will the Trump pardon ANY of them by noon 20 Jan 2021 ???

2021 USA minority rule gerrymander H Reps impeached Trump again today for his 6 Jan 2021 speech — HRes 24.

    Good luck getting 17 R Sens to convict — 50 commie Donkey Sens plus 17 = 67 = 2/3+ of 100.

  16. Rep S. Cohen is 2021-2022 chair of subcomt on Const/etc. of H Judic Comt

    — ie a top Donkey gerrymander hack.

  17. Have the standard of 500, as determined by each state and the DC, qualified voters per congressional district as a standard for inclusion in the ballot. This threshold would make only the serious candidates viable but could make third parties also viable. Make the deadline August 1 of the presidential election year.

  18. Good luck with that. 13 states can block an amendment. Over 20 states have populations small enough that their votes would be inconsequential in a popular vote presidential election. This steaming pile would also remove state authority over their own election processes. Then you’ve got Texas and Florida who wouldn’t vote to pass this even though it would advantage them.
Pure political theater. There’s no chance this passes and they know it.
