On April 6, the city of Alva, Oklahoma, held elections for city office. Troy Brooks, a registered Libertarian, won for City Council, ward 3, defeating his only opponent 381-343. The election was non-partisan.
Alva is in northwestern Oklahoma, near the Kansas state line, and has a population of about 5,000. Thanks to Chris Powell for this news.
The Illinois Green Party elected its first mayor a few days ago as well. Looks like us third partiers are still managing to get folks elected at the local level even as the two ruling parties generally make it more difficult for higher office. https://www.facebook.com/ILGreenParty/posts/4312656532087563
The Oklahoma LP seems to be improving. That’s the 2nd Oklahoma Libertarian elected this year and they had 3 in 2019. As far as I can tell they didn’t have any election wins before that.
As is typical third-parties get elected when there’s no letter beside their name…. proves one of two things, people don’t understand there can be more than two parties in a legislature, or the spoiler effect is that strong for Americans because of media/politician brainwashing/propaganda…. because other countries have first past the post and have de facto three-party systems; Canada and the UK, both use FPTP systems and have three national parties and other strong regional parties.
Congratulations to Troy Brooks, the Libertarian Party and the people of Alva, Oklahoma!
