Political Scientist Marjorie Hershey Article on Minor Parties and Voting Systems

Political scientist professor Marjorie Hershey has this article explaining why third parties in the U.S. win few seats. She says the U.S. would have a multi-party system if it had proportional representation. Ironically, her article says the Libertarian Party is the nation’s most successful third party. This is ironic because she is an expert witness in the pending lawsuit Libertarian Party of Alabama v Merrill, 20-13356. The lawsuit challenges Alabama’s policy of giving a free list of the registered voters to the Democratic and Republican Parties, but no other party. Her evidence supports the position of the state, and says the Libertarian Party doesn’t deserve a free copy of the voter registration list because it is not a real political party.

  1. Gerrymanders + plurality =

1/2 or less votes x 1/2 gerrymander areas = 1/4 or less CONTROL = oligarchy with monarch *leaders*.

Much much worse primary math — esp in 2022 with all open / no incumbent areas.

  2. Hopefully the Alabama Libertarians see your post here and that article and make good use of it. It seems to me the Libertarian Party should use her article to have her testimony thrown out in that lawsuit. Either she’s lying in the article, or she’s lying in the court case, and the registration and voting statistics are clear that it is the latter.

  3. They’re not a real third party because they are basically a minor league GOP. REAL third parties are parties like Green, Socialist, Communist etc.

  4. IF the Libertarians are just Republican-lite, and IF they are sucking votes from Republicans, then why NOT let them have the full voter list??

    • Wealthy families could face combined tax rates of as much as 61% on inherited wealth under President Joe Biden’s tax plan, according to a recent analysis.
    • Biden’s plan proposes to nearly double the top tax rate on capital gains and eliminate a tax benefit on appreciated assets known as the “step-up in basis.”
    • The combined tax rate would be the highest in nearly a century, according to the tax policy research group.

How severe will FASCIST reaction be ???

  6. It’s as if Hershey did research for Alabama v Merrill, realized that the Libertarian Party is significant, but she can’t say that because as a witness for Alabama she has to say the party is not significant
