  1. No. Duverger’s law does not mean that only two parties will exist within a two-party system. canada and the UK both have ‘first past the post’ and strong third parties.

  2. Things would be a lot different in the USA if there was a strong third and fourth political party.

  3. Duverger’s OBSERVATION.

NOT QUITE LIKE A *LAW* OF PHYSICS OR CHEMISTRY.

  4. In the case of Canada, while on the federal level there appears to be a multi party system, on the provincial level, which is significant in Canada, there is practically no province that has more than two competitive parties.

In the UK, regional parties like the Scottish National Party create the appearance of a multi party system. Yet we do see in the UK that the Liberals continue to get a handful for seats in every election, yet that handful is proportionally tiny compared to the votes they actually get. Plurality voting in the UK is stifling the seats that the Liberals could get, and be the balance of power, like the Free Democrats in Germany.

  5. It’s possible. People do it all the time. 0f course they want more traction than what they get, but only a fraction of that has anything to do with the ballot access laws.

  6. DUE TO MULTIPLE LARGER PARTIES IN CANADA –

THE NATIONAL GERRYMANDER MINORITY RULE IS ABOUT 20 PCT —

IE UN-STABLE BALKANS TYPE REGIME CAN BLOW UP ANYTIME –

WEST – ONT – QUE – EAST >>> MORE STATES INTO USA

  7. Never Trumpers can give up and bend the knee, they can become Democrats, or they can leave politics. They’ll never create a third party that amounts to anything and they’ll never be seen as anything but traitorous scum in the Republican Party, which is what they are.

  8. “but only a fraction of that has anything to do with the ballot access laws.”

Note that in Canada and the UK it is far easier to start a new party, or run as an independnent candidate than in most of the US.

  9. True, and they each still have two dominant parties, although their third parties are stronger.
