California election law says the Secretary of State should tally the number of registrations in each party, and each political body, 135 days before any regularly-scheduled primary election, to determine which parties are qualified. This year, the primary is June 7. So the legal deadline for the tally is January 23. But the Secretary of State has said the tally won’t be ready until late February.
The tally is important, because it will reveal whether the Common Sense Party qualified. Perhaps the delay is due to staff shortages in the county elections offices, but that is just speculation.
Qualified for what purposes?
My understanding is that all registrations are tracked in a computerized system under state control (this is federal requirement). I think the SOS sends the counts to the counties for them to double check.
If California reduced recognition to some minimal number such as 50, and eliminated write-in affiliations there would never be a question as about whether a voter’s party preference is a party preference when he becomes a candidate.
Richard:
I wonder if the Common Sense Party is REALLY close to qualifying. Without knowing for sure if the party’s candidates will be able to run in the June election under their party affiliation or NO PARTY PREFERENCE will it affects how many will run & for which offices?
I think that the Common Sense Party is not going to qualify for the 2022 ballot, but they will keep going to try for the 2024 ballot.
The CA SOS office is under NO PENALTY if they miss the statutory deadlines! You can “expose” Shirly Weber all you want for NOT FOLLOWING THE LAW, but unless she is voted out THIS YEAR, she is probably NOT going to follow what she doesn’t get penalized from NOT FOLLOWING!
Shirley Weber is incompetent, a total disaster and ruining the SOS. The office is way behind on campaign finance reporting. Newsom appointed her as sympathy affirmatve action hire. She should resign.
This is why it’s a bad idea to elect democrats. They hire incompetence thanks to affirmative bigotry. We are about the get the same thing on the supreme court with someone like Oprah Winfrey or Michael “Michelle” Obama or Krazy Kamala.
