California Bill to Ban Ranked Choice Voting

California Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach) has introduced AB 2808. It makes the use of ranked choice voting illegal, even for charter cities and charter counties. Here is the text of the bill. Section One sets forth statements criticizing ranked choice voting and denying that is has any benefits.

O’Donnell has been in the legislature since 2014. He has not previously authored election law bills, and he is not a member of the Assembly Elections Committee.

California Bill to Ban Ranked Choice Voting — 10 Comments

  1. Gerrymander ROT in CA made worse by CA top 2 primary — one more math moron *reform*.

    Condorcet 1780s – 1780s = RCV done right.

  2. Good, California Democratic and Libertarian Parties used RCV in single-winner election districts which is one-party voting system.

Two-party system requires one vote between three choices where the biggest two can split that party’s vote and then the 2nd biggest wins

    California’s bogus RCV = one-party rule

The United Coalition is bringing the new connection between Democratic, Republican, Green, Libertarian and One in 2022.

Draft non-binary gender name Joe Aliotti [Democratic] for CA State Treasurer and our opposite gender name Anna Canetti [Libertarian] for Insurance Commissioner.

More good things to come in March Madness2022!

  3. This “Democratic” legislator probably also attacks the GOP for their attacks on free and fair elections, and here he is proving that both ruling parties are generally hostile towards what is colloquially termed democracy. What a hypocrite.

Write that letter Tom. I might also do so, or at least give the CA Dems’ FB Page a comment featuring this bill.

  4. The bill states:

“Ranked choice voting can lead to inherently undemocratic outcomes like the winners of elections failing to receive a plurality of the vote.”

So, the election of a candidate by a smaller plurality is to be preferred to a candidate winning by a larger plurality, or even a majority?

  5. Democrats don’t like to be reminded of facts like Bill Clinton got elected with a smaller percentage of the popular vote in 1992, than Trump got in 2016.

In fact, no candidate for President named Clinton ever got a majority of the popular voting. Ever.

  6. LOL good point! And then Trump won even bigger in 2020 but the Chinese Communists cooked up a virus with Fauci, Gates, Soros and the NWO and used it as an excuse to steal the Presidential election and put in their hand picked and controlled puppets.

  7. All political parties, when they power, are corrupt. Maybe some more than others.

    https://billkingblog.com/what-our-founding-fathers-said-about-political-parties/
“[Political parties] serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation, the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill-concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common counsels, and modified by mutual interests. . . .Let me now . . . warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party ..

. . . . It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeebles the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption . . . A fire not to quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into flame . . .”
    Washington

“ There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.”
John Adams in letter to Johnathan Jackson, 1780.

“I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a political party, I would decline to go.”
Thomas Jefferson letter to Francis Hopkinson, 1789

“Party knows no impulse but spirit, no prize but victory. It is blind to truth, and hardened against conviction. It seeks to justify error by perseverance, and denies to its own mind the operation of its own judgment. A man under the tyranny of party spirit is the greatest slave upon the earth, for none but himself can deprive him of the freedom of thought.”
Thomas Paine, The Opposers of the Bank, 1787.

So these brilliant founding fathers, make it look as if California Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell is either a moron, or a corrupt politician.

  8. To finish my point this bill must not pass, in fact we an opposite bill that requires universal CA RCV elections to restore our democracy from “Flawed democracy” ranked 26th, behind almost all of european countries.
