Kansas registration data for July 1, 2022, is: Republican 851,882; Democratic 495,574; Libertarian 22,207; independent and other, 560,309.
Percentages are: Republican 44.14%; Democratic 25.68%; Libertarian 1.15%; independent and other, 29.03%.
Percentages in October 2020 were: Republican 45.10%; Democratic 26.53%; Libertarian 1.06%; independent and other, 27.32%.
Three points.
1. This is an all-time high for the Libertarians in both absolute numbers and as a percentage of the total registered voters in the state.
2. Despite the recent months’ small (less than 1/2 %) uptick in the number of registered Republicans and Democrats (most likely due to the upcoming primary as this Tuesday, July 12, is the cut-off for registering to vote in that primary) both of the old parties have fewer registered voters than they did even a year ago, while the Libertarians and Unaffiliated have gone up every month.
3. All of this under the umbrella of a Kansas law (HB 2183) passed this time last year, that makes it a felony with punishment of up to 17 months in prison and a $100,000 fine, if the person registering to vote believes you are falsely representing an election official. Having talked to the SOS office, county clerks and attorneys, a simple verbal assertion, “Well, I thought they were an election official” is sufficient to bring charges under the current wording of the law. I have spoken to my county Clerk (who oversees elections and voter registration, and which is also a partisan office in Kansas – she’s a Republican in a VERY Republican county) even she doesn’t support the law and has advised her staff(who ARE election officials) to not register people to vote unless they come into the elections office.
Glad to see the increase in registered Libertarians.
Libertarians have really shot up in Kansas, and are now comfortably above 1% of total registered voters. The list of states that have partisan registration in which Libertarians are currently in excess of 1% of the total are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Utah. Nevada used to be on this list, but Libertarian registration in that state has not kept up. The next states that I would expect to see on this list are Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wyoming (not necessarily in that order).
