U.S. House Passes Bill to Reform Electoral Vote Counting Process in Congress

On September 21, the U.S. House passed HR 8873, the “Presidential Election Reform Act”, by 229-203. All Democrats voted for it. Nine Republicans voted for it: Liz Cheney (Wyoming), Tom Rice (South Carolina), Adam Kinzinger (Illinois), Fred Upton (Michigan), John Katko (New York), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), Chris Jacobs (New York), Peter Meijer (Michigan), and Jaime Herrera Beutler (Washington).

None of the Republicans from the top-two states voted for it, except Congresswoma Beutler.

  1. It reduces the power of congress to reverse the official election returns for presidential electors.

  2. @CC,

    It moves the meeting date for electors to December 23. If that is a Sunday, then they thoughtfully move it to the next day. They probably wanted to avoid a conflict with the NFL.

    The goal is likely letting states such as California to keep counting votes after the election.

  4. @Scotty Kilmer… No what Jim failed to mention is that if the date falls on a Saturday, then it’s moved ahead one day to Friday…. They’re trying avoid a meeting of the electors on a weekend. Which I don’t really see the point of, but that’s what the bill does…. I don’t get pushing it so close to Christmas either.
