Texas Monthly Article on Forward Party

Texas Monthly has this article about the Forward Party, by Senior Editor Michael Hardy.

The article says that Ross Perot may have caused the election of Bill Clinton in 1992, and that Jill Stein may have caused the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Exit polls from both elections rebut this idea. Furthermore, in 1992, during the period July through September, when Perot was not a candidate, the polls consistently showed that Clinton was going to defeat President George H. W. Bush. 1. Gary Johnson did not cause Hillary Clinton to lose in 2016. According to the exit polls, 25% of the Johnson voters said if they hadn’t voted for Johnson, they would have voted for Clinton. 15% of the Johnson voters said if they hadn’t voted for Johnson, they would have voted for Trump. So Trump only got a 10% advantage. Taking 10% of the Johnson vote and applying it to all the states in which neither Clinton nor Trump had as much as 50%, the only state that Johnson tipped from Clinton to Trump was Michigan. And even if Clinton had carried Michigan, she still would have lost the electoral vote. Trump still would have had 288 electoral votes without Michigan; he needed 270.

  2. At any rate, those exit polls from 2016 indicate that the Libertarian candidates were drawing more votes from Democrats, which I have pointed out before.
