As it is now, whoever gets a plurality is elected. But, if it happens in enough elections that legislators are getting elected with less-than-majority pluralities, more and more people will question the validity of plurality voting, and give more consideration to alternative voting methods.
This happened enough times in Maine to prompt the people there to try ranked choice voting.
