Major Party Share of Registration Declines Again

In the 32 jurisdictions that provide for registration by party, the figures for October 2022 show that the share of voters registered in minor parties and as independents has hit a new high. 31.67% of registered voters in those places are not members of either the Republican or Democratic Party.

In past even-year October tallies, the number of registrants outside the two major parties has been: 2020 30.82%; 2018 30.90%; 2016 30.03%; 2014 29.04%; 2012 28.05%; 2010 26.44%; 2008 25.66%; 2006 25.97%; 2004 25.02%.

The data will be printed in the December 1, 2022 Ballot Access News, by state and by party.

Major Party Share of Registration Declines Again — 6 Comments

  1. Is there a study comparing the ratio of financial contributions to voter registration? IOW, do declining registrations correlate to declining financial support for the major parties?

  2. I can certainly say this true in Kansas. The percentage registered either R or D is less than two years ago at the last general election. The percentage of those registered Unaffiliated or Libertarian has gone up every month as of the prior general election. Libertarians in Kansas are at an all-time high in both absolute numbers and as percentage of the total state registration at around 1.2%.

  3. I’d like to see a study on the relationship between party registration and fundraising allocated from committees to discrete campaigns. To my understanding some municipalities have laws limiting how money can be moved around, with party membership coming into consideration.

  4. A “choice” between the “top-two” political parties on an election ballot is like a “choice” between TWO LETHAL STRAINS OF COVID! Ranked-Choice Voting is a STEP UP, but I it does not look like even third-parties benefit from its ballot presence yet. Have ANY third-party candidates been elected in the states that use it yet? In In Maine? In Alaska? Nevada just added RCV by approving a ballot-proposition for it with THIS ELECTION. As much as I detest the “top-two” political party dominance of each and every election, the third parties have GOT TO PROVE SOME VIABILITY (which they have yet to do recently!), otherwise their “ballot-presence” and “state recognition” becomes a waste of good ink!

  5. Mostly true that they are a waste of ink. Sometimes still true that they are good for splitting the leftist vote or punish the GOP whenever a rhino wins, although thank Jesus that is happening less and less often anymore!
