Bills for Texas to Join National Popular Vote Compact

Two Democratic members of the Texas legislature have introduced SB 95 and HB 237, which would provide that Texas join the National Popular Vote compact for electing presidents. They are Senator Nathan Johnson of Dallas, and Representative Vikki Goodwin of Austin.

  1. Whether you have National Popular Vote, or a constitutional amendment for a direct popular vote, you still have the fundamental problem of all plurality voting: you can STILL get a candidate elected with a minority vote.

    Maine has figured this out: use ranked choice voting.

    And the nice thing about the Maine system, it doesn’t require a constitutional amendment, or interstate compact. There is no requirement for any number of states to adopt it. Altho, it would be best if at least all the swing states adopted it.

  2. Maine does RCV right; they allow all parties to have their own nominees, unlike Alaska.
