On March 2, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed SB 1820, which bans any local government from using ranked choice voting. The bill impacts the city of Memphis, which had voted some time ago to use ranked choice voting for its own elections. The state had claimed that Memphis had no authority to do that, so it hadn’t been used yet.
ANOTHER ANTI-DEMOCRACY MACHINATION BY A STATE ANTI-DEMOCRACY MINORITY RULE GERRYMANDER REGIME.
CONDORCET WITH APPV TIEBREAKER = RCV DONE RIGHT.
Ever since the Oscars have been using ranked choice I’ve cooled off on the voting method. It’s a way to form a concensus. But most of the best picture winners in recent years have this second consideration, safe and inoffensive feel to them. I want movies that perhaps I wouldn’t have voted for, but that are awesome in their own right to win. And that doesn’t seem to happen anymore. Maybe a plurality isn’t so bad.
What is their reason for banning it? Just because Memphis didn’t properly ask their permission?
I also wondered why they banned it, so I watched the video of the committee meetings. The argument in favor appeared to be that the process was complex and confusing. The argument against was mainly that the people of Memphis wanted it, though there were also references to others who have used it successfully.

I hate to cite Wikipedia, but:
“Ranked voting in multi-member districts is used in national elections in Australia, Ireland, Malta, the United Kingdom (Scottish and Welsh Parliaments), single-winner ranked voting is used to elect national-level politicians from the states of Maine and Alaska in the United States. Ranked voting is used in Slovenia, and Nauru. It is used for some local elections in New Zealand. It is used in the United States by some cities, counties, and federal primaries in 16 states plus 5 more states’ overseas voters, for federal elections.”
@Adam,
It is also used by private(non-government) groups. Several organizations, including a church I once attended, used it for elections of their governing board.
Tennessee is right.
Ever since it was used (last election) in Alaska and got that RINO elected again I am against it.
Smart move. Ranked choice only elects commies. It doesn’t help third parties at all.
The two largest parties in Australia are anything but communist, and the third largest party, the Australian Greens, are are similar to the social democrats of the Nordic countries. So even that bit of old Cold War propaganda misses the mark.
Banning RCV is a desperate move from authoritarians desperate to cling onto power using the current rigged system.
Joshua is spewing commie propaganda. Look at Alaska: ranked choice elected commies.
Duh I just shit myself. I am a moron.
Well now that makes sense…
I support RCV too comrades. Once it elects communists we can eliminate voting.
Are you serious about the commie comments? How ignorant.
I guess I’ll have to whip out the testosterone spray and remind y’all that a form of RCV is used to chose the winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Ranked choice is worse than the current system. Approval is less bad.
