Illinois Bill to Move Primary Petition Deadline from December of the Year Before the Election, to November

Illinois Senator Julie A. Morrison (D-Deerfield) has introduced SB 2306, to move the petition filing deadline for primary candidates from 106 days before the primary, to 134 days before the primary. Illinois primaries for all federal and state office are in March. If the bill became law, primary petitions would move from early December of the year before the election, to early November of the year before the election.

It is almost comical that the United States has a federal election system in which, in at least one state, a major party candidate for Congress might be required to file a petition an entire year before the election itself. In most other countries, candidates can file a few weeks, or at most a few months, before the election.

  1. Trump is the best President since at least Andrew Jackson and probably ever. You don’t fire someone for doing an amazing job. Obviously the election was stolen. Sleepy joke is Xi puppet. Clear collusion with Fauci, Soros, suckerberg/faceplant,CCP/xi, dominion, pre musk Twitter, Google, globalists and other bad actors to bioengineer virus and wreck election. 2024 Trump gets back in and cleans up the mess once and for all!!!

  2. Seriously, does anyone really believe more eligible voters really voted for sleepy joke over Trump?! Sure, a lot of people are dumb, but not a lot are that dumb!!!!

  3. HOW SOON BEFORE A DEADLINE IS THE DAY AFTER AN ELECTION DAY ???

FOR EXAMPLE — REQUIRED DECLARE AS CANDIDATE ???

  4. There should be no candidates, only a winning party which selects peace officers – a position which would combine the duties of law enforcement, judge, jury, and executioner. The trash company would dispose of the corpses of the executed offending perps.

  6. Just another incumbency protection scheme. It used to be that office holders didn’t become lame ducks until after the election. Now, they are effectively lame ducks when their petitioning deadline passes (which gets earlier and earlier with each election), and no opponents have filed nomination petitions against them.

  7. This violates the 26th Amendment by denying meaningful participation in the electoral process to a protected class of individuals (see Terry v Adams).

  8. Why should there be candidates at all? It’s a waste of time for losing parties to select would be officeholders, much less a year ahead of time. Elections should be held every year, with the winning party replacing officeholders as it sees fit in between elections.
