District of Columbia Initiative for Ranked Choice Voting Begins to Circulate

The District of Columbia permits the initiative process. An initiative is about to start circulating that would provide for ranked choice voting in partisan primaries and general elections. It would also provide that independent voters are free to choose a partisan primary ballot.

Unlike initiatives for top-four and top-five, it would not eliminate the ability of parties to have nominees. Here is the text. Thanks to Fairvote for this news.

  1. Parties should be able to determine the method of voting that they each prefer in their own primaries, no matter what method is used in the general election.

  2. They don’t need primaries, unless they choose to use that method and pay for and run it themselves. Or better yet we could just have vote by party and have the party exec comm choose who holds office in a closed door private meeting after they win the election.

  3. Parties should be free to support candidates by yard signs, billboards, broadcast ads, social media, word of mouth, or any other 1st Amendment method.
