Mississippi Democratic Candidate for Governor Wins Lawsuit Putting Him Back on the Primary Ballot

On May 26, a Mississippi state trial court ruled that Bob Hickingbottom should be restored to the August 2023 Democratic primary ballot. He is running for the party’s nomination for Governor. The general election is November 7, 2023. Hickingbottom v The Mississippi State Democratic Party, Hinds Co. Circuit Court 23-249. The decision is not yet in writing, but was delivered orally by the judge.

The Democratic Party had removed him from its primary ballot on the grounds that he had not filed a Statement of Economic Interest. Hickingbottom asserts that no law authorizes removing a candidate from the ballot for that reason. Candidates who fail to file a Statement of Economic Interest are subject to a fine. Here is the Brief filed by Hickingbottom. It had been filed on May 3.

  1. The “qualified” parties regard the ballot as their domain which they can rent out namespace for candidates and select the admission of voters to their ballot shindig.

  2. Off topic: IPR is reporting Bill Redpath will be taking over this site from Richard Winger. Is this true?

  3. In Minnesota, you do not need the party’s permission to file as a major party candidate to get onto the primary ballot. just fill out basic paperwork and pay a fee (or submit petitions to waive the fee).

  4. Casual observer,, would that be a good or bad thing? Is he for TRUMP and America?

  5. Redpath is a Sarwark puppet and would censor and push communism even more than Richard Winger.

  6. I thought he was more conservative? He stood strong with Bob Barr, Aaron Starr and Alicia Mattson during the 2000s decade, did he not?

  7. My memory might be bad but I thought Redpath endorsed Wayne Root to succeed him as Chairman. I don’t remember him endorsing Sarwark.
