On May 23, the Maine Senate defeated LD 1320, which would have let independent voters sign petitions to place candidates on primary ballots. The vote was 13-20.
Earlier the legislature had changed the law to permit independents to choose a primary ballot, so this result seems illogical.
My guess was that hyper-partisans of the Democratic and Republican Parties realized that passing this would make it easier for the Green Party to run their own candidates. If I recall, Lisa Savage had to run as an Independent instead of a Green in one of Maine’s more recent Senate elections because it was an extremely difficult process to get on the primary ballot of a smaller qualified party.
Greens are as hyperpartisan as you can get. Full on commies.
One would think that folks commenting on a blog which is very friendly to fair ballot access requirements and third parties, would be capable of more nuance than “everyone to the left of the Republican Party is a communist”. But that was so that they could vote in the Democrat or Republican primary. Democrats realize that unenroĺled who would vote in their primary are soft supporters who will vote D in the general. It would be even better for them if Republicans would bar unenrolled from their primary.
But for petitions it is more likely that an unenrolled will sign a minor party petition. There are plenty of Democratic or Republican signers.

Not only is everyone to the left of the Republican Party a communist, but a lot of Republicans such as the Bush, Romney, McCain, Cheney, Dole etc country club establishment is communist also. The John Birch Society, the world’s foremost experts on communist treason, pointed out Eisenhower was a communist. Things have not gotten better since then.
