On June 20, the Vermont Senate sent HB 429 back to committee, which effectively kills it, because the session is almost over. HB 429 would have made it impossible for someone who lost a primary to then run in the general election as an independent, or the nominee of another party.
Fusion lives.
The final version of the bill did not ban fusion (although the original version did). So fusion was safe in any event.
Nevertheless,, the two issues are related. You can’t have fusion, if you can’t run for multiple nominations.
Too bad. Sore losers should just go away.
I guess this turnout also protects “sore winners” like Bernie Sanders. In his races for Congress from 2006 and in his 3 runs for US Senate, Bernie Sanders entered the Democrat primary, won, then declined the nomination so that he could run as an Independent. Banning “sore losers” would probably also ban “sore winners” like Bernie.
Anyway, if more than one party wants to nominate someone, that’s up to each party, not the state. And, if someone doesn’t get the nomination of one party, what authority does anyone have from preventing another party from nominating that candidate?
Hey hey hey hey! What is going on here?
Not a dam thing.
