At the time of the American revolution, the colonists were some of the freest people on earth, in many respects more free even than Englishmen back home in England, and certainly more free than people in various European countries and colonies, as well as many non European peoples. In many ways, it was exactly the relatively higher level of freedom they already enjoyed which allowed them to dream bigger and reach for even more.
Another example, the fall of the iron curtain and then the collapse of the Soviet Union itself, did not take place when the Soviet system was at its most repressive, but after several decades of gradual relative liberalization (compared to the Stalin era) which at the end accelerated under Gorbachev.

The British colonists were much more free than the others. It’s simply not true that the revolution happened because they were the most oppressed people in the world. By many regards, they were already the least oppressed at the time before the American revolution. And while it’s true that certain particular actions of King and Parliament got under their skin, those were minor compared with what colonists in other parts of the Americas, people all over Europe, and people all over the world had to deal with at the time.

Pennsylvania and all of New England abolished slavery between 1777 and 1784. The Northwest Ordinance created several new free territories, later states, in 1789. The constitution sunsetted importation of slaves in 1808, with slave trade acts in 1794 and 1800 which gradually cut down on the practice.
Little known fact: the last US state to abolish slavery was not Texas, as most sources claim, but New Jersey in 1866. See details at

Like for example above, that New Jersey and some American Indian tribes still had legal chattel enslavement of black slaves into 1866 (the emancipation proclamation did not impact union states; NJ did not ratify the 13th amendment and waited until a state law was signed to free the rest of its slaves in 1866, and the Indian confederacy in what is now Oklahoma did not sign a treaty to end slavery until 1866). Delaware and Kentucky had legal slavery until December 1865, six months after Juneteenth in Texas. New Mexico peonage, a hereditary form of debt slavery, ended by law in 1867, but the practice persisted illegally even past the turn of the century.
Similarly, slavery in Alaska ended legally with US purchase in 1867, but continued to exist illegally into the 20th century. Hawaii legally ended slavery in the 1850s, but debt slavery and indentured servitude was the main form of labor on Hawaii’s plantations until US annexation in 1898, and in less legal or formal ways even later.
The Angola plantation in Lousiana and Parchman farm in Mississippi operate very much like antebellum plantations did in those states, using prison convicts, a majority (but not all) of whom are blacks.
Sharecropping, company towns, and convict leasing maintained a system little changed from slavery well into the 20th century. A similar system persists into the 21st, consisting of convicts, illegals, and drug addicts who fall into debt to organized crime syndicates, who all end up effectively as slaves, although only the convicts are legally eenslaved.
