On August 18, James Buckley died at the age of 100. In 1970 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York. He was the Conservative Party nominee, and he defeated the nominees of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. He is the last person to have won a U.S. Senate election as the nominee of a third party.
More recently, Dean Barkley served as a third party U.S. Senator for a short time, representing Minnesota. However he was appointed by Governor Jesse Ventura, not elected. Thanks to Gene Berkman for the news.

No third-party candidate has been elected to the US Senate in the last 26 elections (since 1970). About 33 seats are up every two years, so that is ~33 x 26 = ~860 failures to elect a third-party candidate to the US Senate.

There is a lot of disrespectful people nowadays who don’t honor military, police officers, teachers, judge’s, elected officials, priests, bosses at work, or anyone in authority who is better than they are. Why should I believe you two over my teacher? She was and still is super smart. She’s 80 now and not a communist. She taught me and my kids. She never told us if she is a Democrat or a Republican. She goes to church every Sunday. She went to college and got a college degree. Smartest lady I ever met. Very nice too, and used to be real pretty when she was younger. The point of Amendment 24 is to prohibit any poll tax. The inclusion of the word “primary” is intended to make the scope of the Amendment comprehensive, and not to imply any sort of specific party system.
