Mississippi Asks for Rehearing in Case on Ex-Felon Disenfranchisement

On August 18, the state of Mississippi asked the Fifth Circuit to rehear Hopkins v Hosemann, 19-60662. This is the case in which the original panel of Fifth Circuit judges struck down the state’s ban on ex-felons being able to register to vote, on the grounds that the law violates the Eighth Amendment. Here is the state’s brief.

On August 21, the Fifth Circuit asked the plaintiffs to respond by August 31.

  1. According to Ballotpedia / Sentencing Project, over 10% of otherwise-voting-eligible Mississippians were convicted of a felony and may never be able to vote again in that state. Yay Mississippi, you placed first in the country for something!

  2. More off topic fake news. Can you please find a Russia or general world events discussion forum? There are plenty of them. Or how about an open thread to discuss whatever?

Also: suspicion is not fact. There are many other possible explanations. Correlation does not mean causation.

  3. WHAT ??

WAIT UNTIL A KILLER TYRANT IS DEAD/OUT OF POWER AND THEN NOTE ITS KILLER LISTS– ???

SEE 1956 KRUSHCHEV COMMENTS ABOUT STALIN AND HIS 1936-1939 DEATH LISTS.

HOW MANY FOLKS ON TRUMP TYRANT LISTS ???

  4. No, just find a more appropriate forum for that discussion. It’s not about ballot access.

Also, you’ve provided zero evidence for you fact-free assertion that Trump is a “tyrant.”

  5. After someone has did their time and repaid their debt to society they shouldn’t be punished by having their liberties restricted.

  6. AZ bunch of fake news links as usual. Fukushima is an extremely insignificant radiation threat for the US. The nuclear winter hypothesis is very much disputed among experts; even in the case of a full scale nuclear war there would probably be a lot of survivors. It hasn’t happened after nearly 80 years of atomic and nuclear weapons, and 70+ multilateral, so hopefully it will keep not happening. There may well be a WWIII, but that doesn’t necessarily mean nukes will be used, much less all of a significant portion of them.

Godzilla is a fictional character, and Biden has severe senile dementia and has no idea of what is or isn’t real, a condition apparently shared by AZ. It’s not clear what if anything any of that has to do with felons voting.

  7. The vast majority of felons are career criminal recidivists. Some get better than others at not keeping getting caught eventually. It would be better to dispense with the idea of rehabilitation, which rarely ever works, and return to the modes of criminal punishment which were most common before that liberal claptrap became more or less universally accepted as the main way to deal with crime. But even if we keep foolishly warehousing criminals in colleges of criminal knowledge so they can network with other criminals and furthering their criminal skills while pretending to rehabilitate all at taxpayers expense before sooner or later setting the vast majority loose to prey on innocent victims it doesn’t necessarily follow that they should get all their rights back.

  8. A.C. – WHAT PCT OF THE 10 PCT ARE BLACKS ???

    95 PCT PLUS ???

HOW MANY CONVICTED BLACK FELONS BEFORE AGE 18 ???

  9. AZ, more sputtering nonsense and fake news. Your extreme racism is highly embarrassing. You should be ashamed of yourself. And then as if one AZ wasn’t enough here comes the Eddie Brown AZid.

  10. 95% plus? No rational human would think that for a moment. Granted, Africans and African based populations are disproportionately criminal, vis a vis European and Asian, but not nearly to such extent.
