Louisiana Posts List of Candidates for State Office in October 14, 2023 Election

Louisiana elects all its statewide executive posts, and all members of its legislature, to four-year terms on October 14, 2023. The Secretary of State has posted a list of candidates. See it here.

For legislature, the only minor party candidates are four from the Independent Party, and one Libertarian. For statewide office the only minor party candidates are four for Governor from the Independent Party, and one for Lieutenant Governor from the Independent Party.

There are eight independent candidates for the legislature.

  19. Why are mugshots absent conviction public? They have limited actual utility for law enforcement, court officers, and jail staff, and there’s no reason not to use them outside of that after conviction. But using them publicly absent conviction just undermines the presumption of innocence and creates the widespread false impression that arrest is tantamount to guilt.

  24. Nonsense. Once someone jumps, make it public. Punishing the vast majority of defendants who don’t jump bail because of the few who do is inexcusable. Even bounty hunters don’t need a mugshot and can’t do anything with it until a court date is missed. The whole sordid publication of mugshots of people who have not jumped bail or been convicted is a backdoor way of punishing suspects, short circuiting the presumption of innocence, screwing up people’s lives and pressuring them into plea bargains whether they actually did anything they’re accused of or not. It also serves to punish people when the government fails to make its case, whether because they screwed up and arrested the wrong person, because they didn’t do their homework and left holes on their case when they bring it to court, or more rarely because the jury is corrupted or mislead by slick lawyers.

    They are long gone (see Wikipedia on Long Family). Edwin Edwards father of the Open Primary died in 2021. Buddy “Slay The Dragon” Roemer died in 2021. Mike Foster of ‘Foster v. Love’ and ‘Love v. Foster’ died in 2020. Kathleen Blanco of ‘Daughter of Love v. Blanco’ died in 2019.

    Cleo Fields of the Mark of Zorro Gerrymander fame is a candidate for the state senate (but you probably already knew that from the posted list).
