U.S. District Court Rules That Voters Don’t Have Standing to Challenge Former President Donald Trump’s Ballot Position

On August 31, U.S. District Court Judge Robin Rosenberg, an Obama appointee, issued a six-page order in Caplan v Trump, Florida s.d. 0:23cv-61628. The case had been filed by three voters alleging that Former President Donald Trump should be barred from the Florida 2024 Republican presidential primary, on “insurrection” grounds. The judge ruled that the voters don’t have standing. In support of her conclusion, she cited several cases from the 2008 election, when various voters filed somewhat similar lawsuits to keep former President Barack Obama off the ballot on the grounds that he was not a natural-born citizen.     The D.C. Appeals Court ruled Friday that former President Trump can be deposed in suits against the FBI brought by former agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.
    The Department of Justice appealed a ruling from a lower court in July, which came to the same conclusion.
    Strzok is suing the bureau for wrongful termination and Page is suing for invasion of privacy after the pair were embroiled in a political scandal due to work on the bureau’s investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia in 2018.
    Text messages became public in which the pair spoke about how they personally disliked Trump, causing concern that the entire investigation was biased, later resulting in Page resigning and Strzok being fired.

    A federal appeals court on Friday denied the Justice Department’s request to block former President Donald Trump from sitting for a deposition related to lawsuits filed by former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.

    In its ruling, a three-judge panel rejected the government’s effort to reverse a federal judge’s order this year saying Trump could be deposed for two hours in connection with the lawsuits.

    The panel’s two Democratic appointees — Cornelia Pillard and J. Michelle Childs — said they wouldn’t block the deposition. Karen Henderson, who was appointed to the circuit court by former President George H.W. Bush, sided with the Justice Department’s request.

    A Trump spokesperson and a lawyer for Strzok did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday night. Page’s attorneys said in an email to NBC News that “the order is very clear and speaks for itself.”

A better response than ‘FAKE NEWS” to a low-quality story overly biased to either side is to cite a higher-quality story that uses more neutral language and balanced coverage to cover the same story. That way, we can all compare the coverages to decide for ourselves which one is actually better.

    The media is a competitive and heterogeneous industry, and one that has a low barrier to entry in the Internet age (witness this blog). Real Libertarians have faith in the power of market forces to lower price and increase quality.
