Maine defines a qualified party as a group with at least 5,000 registrants. Earlier this year No Labels had 6,953 registrants, but on May 11 the Maine Secretary of State sent them all a letter, asking if they really wanted to be members of the No Labels Party.
But four months later, the party still has 6,155 registrants, so it seems No Labels is a qualified party in Maine. See this story.
Hmm? So a state merely sends a letter to those new party members and a whopping 800 folks now say ‘no’? !
That’s an 11½% dropout.
What did the state say to these people? Was sending such a letter routine to new members of a new party? What prompted the state’s letter, were a number voters clamoring for the change.
Seems if a small-town election had about 7000 voters for someone or an issue and then about 12% moments later have ‘buyers remorse’ (declare their votes were wrong) there would be some investigation.
Predictably, a lot of people don’t read their mail, and even fewer take the time to switch their registration back, particularly with no primary imminent. 800 people bothering to do so indicates the fraud was widespread.
Town clerks informed the SOS that they received complaints of deceptive practices by the paid no lube subcontractors. SOS informed people who registered with the (non)party. It wasn’t routine, because town clerks don’t routinely get such complaints.

If the SOS really wanted a purge, she would have at least included a blank registration card, perhaps with everything except party and signature preprinted, included a preaddressed stamped envelope to town clerks, followed up with phone calls, etc. This was a courtesy letter, far from a purge.
My bet is that most people did not even read the letter. I bet most people considered it to be junk mail and threw it in the trash can.
Out of those who did read the letter, some of them probably did not care enough to do anything about it.

If anyone who was duped into registering to vote with the No Labels Party wants to vote in a Democrat or Republican primary next year they will be in for a rude awakening when they get denied voting in the primary election next year. Then they will be angry and they will want to switch the party affiliation on their voter registration.

There’s no reason to do that unless there’s evidence of widespread fraud like there was in this case. The only thing that should have been done differently was pointed out by Ariel.
The Secretary of State here is Shenna Bellows, who last year was declared in federal court that her practice of automatic deregistration of third par ty members was a “punishment far beyond called foto suit the crime.r
