California 2024 U.S. Senate Race

On October 10, Steve Garvey said he would run for the U.S. Senate in California as a Republican. See this story. He is famous for his sports accomplishments in baseball and also football.

If two prominent Republicans were to run for that Senate seat, it is conceivable, though unlikely, that the top two vote-getters in the March 2024 primary would be two Republicans. There are three prominent Democrats running for the seat, all of them members of the U.S. House. More well-known Democrats might also emerge, including possibly the appointed incumbent Democratic Senator, Laphonza Butler.

A November 2024 California ballot with only two Republicans listed, and with no-write space, would certainly upset the top-two system. Thanks to Thomas Jones for the link.

  1. Based on this reporting I guess I’d hope for only two Repubs on the ticket. Considering the state’s vast number of Dems and non-Republicans, the bad situation would give a boost to the movement to topple TopTwo!

  2. HOW MANY BRIBES AND THREATS ON MANY FOLKS N-O-T TO BE A CANDIDATE IN THE ROTTED CA TOP 2 PRIMARY ???

    P-A-T

  3. I’m hoping for two Republicans as well. Is it correct the Kalifornicated state also has no write in?

  4. Hey Pat,
According to BAN Blog there is no write-in option.
To quote the entry: “…2024 California ballot with only two Republicans listed, and with no-write space, would certainly upset the top-two system…

  5. The original top-two law in California left write-in space on the general election ballot for congress and state office, but said such write-ins could never be counted. When a lawsuit was filed in state court, charging that it violates equal protection to refuse to count write-ins, the legislature changed the law by removing write-in space, in 2012, but only for Congress and state office in the general election. Write-ins are still allowed in the primary.

  6. The general election was what I was asking about, in case the scenario in OP were to actually play out. Thanks for your answers.

  7. I remember Steve Garvey when he played baseball. Great role model for youngsters. He could hit that ball out of the stadium too. Good luck on his running.
