The New Yorker Covers the Court Fight Over Whether No Labels Can Block Candidates from Running in its Arizona Primary

The New Yorker has this article about the lawsuit in Arizona, over whether No Labels can block candidates from running in its primary for Congress and state office.

The article has one small factual error. The lawsuit Unity ’08 v FEC, which ruled that parties without any nominees so far do not need to follow federal campaign finance laws that most parties must follow, was won in the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. circuit, not in a U.S. District Court. Thanks to Richard Grayson for the link.

  1. Thanks for posting this informative article that clearly explains the No Labels intent and situation.

  2. In a previous set of comments, Jim Riley asked who was the chair of the Arizona No Labels Party. This post from the national organization (https://www.nolabels.org/no-labels-arizona-lawsuit) says it is Gail Koshland. Also known as Gail Koshland Wachtel, she is a 71yo Tucson resident and retired University of Arizona lecturer in physiology. According to easily searchable campaign contributions, in 2016 she made large contributions to Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC, which was founded by Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly to promote gun control and responsible gun ownership, and lesser contributions to Democratic candidates. She is the president of the Koshland Foundation, active in the Bay Area. Her father was a well-known biochemist and from the family that founded Levi Strauss & Company, of which Gail’s grandfather was CEO.

  3. It seems that the No Labels folk are throwing away a HUGE opportunity by not running candidates for Congress. Given that there is an almost 50-50 split in both Houses, just a handful of independent candidates elected from swing districts and states would be power brokers in Congress.
