Federal judges on Thursday ordered the appointment of two special masters to assist in the redraw of 13 Detroit state House and Senate seats and solidified a March 29 deadline for the court’s adoption of final redrawn maps.
One of the special masters, Brigham Young University’s Michael Barber, will work on alternative maps to be used in the event the redistricting commission is unable to produce timely maps that are compliant with court orders.
A second, University of California Irvine’s Bernard Grofman, will review the commission’s and special master’s maps to make recommendations to the court on their suitability.
