Arizona Bill to Abolish Presidential Election

On January 22, Arizona State Senator Anthony Kern (R-Glendale) introduced SCR 1014, a proposed constitutional amendment.  It would provide that voters no longer choose presidential electors in Arizona.  Instead, the outgoing legislature would choose the presidential electors.

If the legislature passed this bill, then it would go on the ballot for voters to decide whether to put it in the State Constitution.

Senator Kern was in attendance at the January 6, 2021 event at the U.S. Capitol Building.  He is running for Congress this year, so he won’t be running for re-election.

  1. Mischaracterizing headline. Presidential election would take place, just with different and better method of electing electors.

  2. No, it would appear that this is about abolishing the presidential election at the state level. Instead of a statewide popular vote election to then assign the winning candidate’s slate of electors, the electors are proposed to be appointed by the legislature in much the same way that US Senators were appointed by that body prior to the 17th Amendment.

  4. Sounds like some sore loser Republicans in Arizona. They can’t win an election with the current rules so they try to change the rules.

  5. There is no need for it to be a state constitutional amendment, unless there is a provision in the state constitution requiring a popular election.

  6. Better yet would be to have the names of the actual electors returned to the ballot and have them out campaigning in their own unique presidential elector districts. Thus, no need for the actual prez candidate to campaign = end of the circus.

  7. Kneeling fool, as I said, it changes the election method for electors to a superior method over popular elections. The body of metaelectors changes, the election is not abolished. Hopefully the bill passes and is signed into law. Hopefully as well, the inevitable legal challenges from the devil worshipping communist pedophiles on the sinister satanic left are thrown out of court with extreme prejudice, sanctions, and criminal contempt charges for the commie fascist scum.

  8. I agree. Legislatures are the superior election body for presidential electors and US Senators. Unfortunately, the latter will require another amendment to repeal the idiotic 17th. The former should be adopted by as many states and as soon as possible.

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

SUPPORTING THE CONSTITUTIONAL APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS BY THE LEGISLATURE.

Whereas, the United States Constitution, article II, section 1, clause 2 states that, “Each state shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress.”; and
Whereas, it is the responsibility of the Arizona Secretary of State to certify elections, including elections for President of the United States, but the sole authority to appoint presidential electors is granted to the Legislature.
    Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:
    1. That the Legislature shall remain in session during years in which presidential elections are held; and
    2. That the Legislature, and no other official, shall appoint presidential electors in accordance with the United States Constitution.

  10. Definitely much better than popular elections, especially with all the dilution of the originally defined eligible voters since the 1860s with a series of idiotic amendments that should be repealed. Especially the ones adopted improperly in that decade. Allowing women to vote, getting rid of property ownership requirements, outlawing poll taxes and enfranchising 18-20 year olds were and are terrible ideas, too.

  11. Like most people here, I am hoping this bill passes into law and survives any court challenges.

  12. Only the voters should have the right not the government it’s in the constitution and it should stay that way

  13. Only right wing voters should have rights. Many good points made above, except for Zhani Doko and AZ (same person/bot?)
