Various news sources are reporting on March 16 that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has chosen Nicole Shanahan as his vice-presidential running mate. She is an attorney and philanthropist. She founded the Bia-Echo Foundation, which is funds projects related to criminal justice and the environment. She lives in San Mateo County, California.

    Not as much of an issue as some think. Were they to win California, one of them would have to move official residence to a different state. Kennedy could do this easily, as could Shannahan, any time before the electors meet in December. The decision to do that wouldn’t necessarily even have to be made before they would see whether they in fact won that state.

    Dick Cheney was a resident of Texas in 2000, and moved his official residence back to Wyoming before the election because George Bush was also a Texas resident. Therefore, no problem.

    It’s even less of a problem when they don’t actually win their home state. For example, 2020 libertarian ticket, Jo Jorgensen and Spike Cohen were both South Carolina residents.

    The US Constitution bars an elector from voting for two candidates from the same state as the elector.

    An elector from Texas, New York, or any State other than California may vote for two Californians. As a practical matter Kennedy could declare his residence to be Massachusetts where he owns a home.
