Four Presidential Petitions Submitted in Illinois

June 24 is the Illinois petition deadline for independent candidates, and for nominees of unqualified parties.  The Green, Libertarian, and Constitution Parties submitted petitions, as did independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

The Illinois petition deadline had been in August until 1999, when it was moved to June.  Illinois has one of the earliest petition deadlines for general election presidential candidates of any state.  In 2000 a U.S. .District Court enjoined the deadline in a case filed by Ralph Nader, but no declarative relief was sought or granted.  So the June deadline continues to exist in the law.

  1. The deadline is one issue. The required signatures is another.

    Why is it that to have votes counted for a write-in, the candidate just fills out a form, but to have votes counted for a ballot-name, the candidate must submit 25,000 valid signatures as well? Are we playing Monopoly?

    Because printing more names on ballots costs money, confuses voters, splits and siphons votes, etc, and a write in space doesn’t, at least nearly to the same extent, even in states which foolishly print one of those? LOL

  4. Little knowed fact: Illinois foolishly lets them on with way less sigs if nobody bothers to challenge.

    Something tells me someone will challenge all 4 this time, but we’ll see, LOL!
