Fewer Independent Candidates for U.S. House This Year Than at Any Time Since 2004

In the November 2024 election, there are fewer independent candidates for U.S. House on the ballot than at any previous election since 2004. This year there are 57.

Past years: 2022 78; 2020 64; 2018 84; 2016 72; 2014 82; 2012 104; 2010 140; 2008 65; 2006 63; 2004 44.

  2. According to the FEC, there’s 51 candidates for the House that aren’t part of the Democrats or Republicans (or the Democrat-Farm-Labor Party). 30 of them are independent, 5 are from the Green Party, 1 is from the Independent American Party, and 15 are from the libertarian party.

    However, I know that is incorrect because in Michigan alone, there were an additional 4 candidates for the Green Party, 9 for the Libertarian Party, 4 for the U.S. Taxpayers (Constitution) Party, and 7 for the Working Class Party that hadn’t filed with the FEC until recently. Now only 2 from the Green Party, 3 from the Libertarians, and 2 from the U.S. Taxpayers haven’t filed yet.

    Not all of the minor candidate parties bother to register with the FEC.

  3. One cannot use FEC data to know who is on the ballot. The Oct. 1 2024 print issue of BAN will have the number of candidates for each party, in each state. Not everything in the printed newsletter gets put into blog posts.

  14. Both major parties have tried to define the election as either-or. It evades the reality that both of them present lousy choices – altho for different reasons.

    Which form of lousiness the voters are willing to put up with seems to be the only thing that this election will decide.

  19. I use the FEC and compare it between BAN, Ballotpedia, and each state’s individual election sites to figure out who is on the ballot. It’s also very difficult to figure out how money candidates have received and how they spent their campaign donations. The FEC barely ever updates that data.

  22. Both major parties have gotten good at pumping up the economy with lots of deficit spending. How do we decide who’s “better’ at this?

  29. In my state, there are five US House districts, but only two non-major party candidates. The SOS released a list.

  33. Adam, that’s partly because the Libertarian and Green candidates in the 2nd Congressional District of Connecticut sadly each failed to get at least 1% of the vote in 2022, after having succeeded in doing so in many past elections, so they lost their ballot positions.

  38. AZ, there’s no BAN email program and I highly doubt it’s a felony. Harris is much more fascist than Trump. Trump was much better on economic issues and immigration and everything else than Clinton, Obama, Biden, Harris, or the Bushes, Doles, McCains and Romneys of the world.
