Delaware law defines a qualified party as a group that has registration membership of one-tenth of 1% of the state total. The Green Party lost its qualified status in 2022 because its registration dipped. But during September 2024, it increased its registration so that it now has enough members to again meet the requirement.
However, the increased registration was not obtained in time for the party to be on for the 2024 election, the first time the party hasn’t been on the ballot for President in Delaware since 1996. Assuming it keeps the 776 registrants it has now, it will be on in 2026.
Delaware has (Automatic Voter Registration) now so that most new voters are registered as No Party. Persons who before would have mumbled “No Thank You” as they escaped the DMV where they got a really bad picture, are now sent a letter telling them that they are registered, unless you send back a post card that Opts out. The notice reassures them that otherwise they don’t have to do anything – and can always change their party via the web. They probably don’t care, and forget to update their party affiliation.
If the “Green” Party was increasing its registration, so were the “Conservative”, “Independent Party of Delaware”, “Liberal” and “Nonpartisan” parties. Last month the Conservative (+24), Green (+20), Liberal (+36), Nonpartisan (+25), and Independent POD (+351) had increases.
Automatic voter registration.
..going from bad to worse to even worse …how long before the opt out of registering or voting is taken away?
