Georgia Again Has Only One Candidate on the Ballot for Most Legislative Races

As is always the case, in Georgia most legislative elections have only one candidate on the ballot. Here is the list from the Secretary of State. The list has an error for the 148th district state house race. Noel W. Williams, the only candidate, is a Republican nominee but the list failed to print his party affiliation. The “i” next to his name merely means he is an incumbent.

This year there are no independent or minor party candidates on the ballot in any legislative race, due to the extremely difficult 5% petition requirement combined with a high filing fee.

  2. In the State Senate races there is only one candidate on the ballot in these districts: 1,3,4,8,11,13,18,19,20,24,25,31,32,45,49,51,52,54 have only a Republican, and 2,12,14,15,17,22,26,28,33,35,36,38,39,43,44 have only a Democrat.

For State House, 2,3,4,5,7,9,14,15,16,17,18,20,23,27,29,31,32,33,36,104,112,114,119,127,133,134,135,138,146,148,151,152,154,155,156,157,159,160,161,164,170,171,172,174,176,178,179 have only a Republican; 38,39,43,58,61,62,63,65,66,68,69,74,75,76,77,78,79,84,85,87,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,98,106,109,113,115,117,122,129,130,132,140,141,163,165,168 have only a Democrat.

In conclusion, there are 33 State Senate races with only one candidate (out of 56 races), and 91 State House races with only one candidate (out of 180 races). I carry this data in the print issues of BAN every two years, and I take it very seriously.

  3. The signature percentage requirements aren’t the real issue. People are just plain disgusted with the whole system and are busy hunkering down for the impending economic collapse. Here in West Virginia, even the ballot-qualified Livertarians and Mountain Party Green Weenies are in hiding only running one legislative candidate each. In WV State Senate this year, we have 7 unopposed Republicans (no unopposed Dems): 1,2,3,7,8,10,12 = 7/17 = 41% compared to Georgia’s 59%. But, because ALL OF the State Senate districts had been redrawn AFTER the 2020 election, they ALL ONLY required 25 signatures and the modest $200 filing fee for ballot access. Only Dave Sartin in the 6th took advantage of that.
GA State House races are 50.5% unopposed. WV State House, unopposed Republicans: 1,8,9,10,11,12,13,16,17,19,22,26,28,31,33,34,35,43,45,58,59,60,61,62,64,68,69,71,72,73,77,83,84,85,86,87,90,92,93,94
WV State House, unopposed Democrats: 79,81 = 42%
Likewise, the WV House of Delegates districts only needed an average of about 50 signatures and a $100 fee to get on and only Scotty Bowman in the 50th and Rick Thomson (Constitution Party) in the 91st filed.

While 19% of Republicans say Trump should reject the election results if he loses, 12% of Democrats say Kamala Harris should do the same if she loses.

Meanwhile, nearly 3 in 10 Republicans believe that true American patriots may have to resort to violence to save the country, compared with 16% of independents and 8% of Democrats.
