  2. @AZ,

Wikipedia says 1800 in Massachusetts, but I’m not certain that the cited act was actually voter registration. It required the town assessor in each town to prepare a list for the town selectmen to be posted at two locations in the town. This practice of posting the list of voter before an election continues to be practiced in New England.

  5. @AZ,

Texas did not have voter registration until 1960s. The current system of primaries was enacted in 1905.

I recall Ohio had registration from the early 1900s. Cities had annual registration. It was similar to election day voting. Voters would go to their local polling place on Registration Day and register. This would be several weeks before Election Day. Smaller cities and townships would update their registry every several years.

If the US Government maintained a registry, voters could simply update their address and the federal government would inform the new state of residence and old state of residence. This would make it easier to conduct the census as well.

  6. It should be at the most local level possible. We need decentralization of power and of information.
