Oklahoma GOP Asks State Supreme Court to Nix Top Two Initiative — 20 Comments

  1. Seems like the OK GOP is opposing the proposed ballot measure for the same reason that minor parties in California are opposing Top Two there. Interesting.

In 2016, Florida voters rejected a ballot measure to implement a similar Top Two primary election scheme with political parties concerned that minority-majority districts would lose out. The defeated Florida measure was intended to solve a problem where the vast majority of elections were illegally decided at closed primary elections instead of general elections that kept most voters from selecting their preferred candidate.

Does OK elections have a Florida problem with it’s primaries?

  2. ANTI-DEMOCRACY gerrymander oligarchs love ANTI-democracy minority rule gerrymanders and plurality elections and extremist primaries

  3. Government and primaries should not mix. We need separation of government and primaries.

  4. I note that the Oklahoma prohibition on write-in voting forces voters to associate with two particular parties’ candidates, AND it forces any candidate to ally with those two parties to have a chance of being elected, even if the candidate has fundamental differences with both parties self-entrenched leaders.
All in all, the present Oklahoma election laws foster fascism on the state and local levels.
Oklahomans, like all Americans, have been channeled by law into a fascist police state.
The Libertarian Party alternative only remains on the Oklahoma ballot intermittently by litigation and fortuitous decisions by a few former judges.
The OKLP apparently lacks the resources to even file an Amicus brief in opposition to the pending lawsuit.

  5. Trump is such a tyrant for getting criminal illegal invaders deported! Oh my gosh, how horrible and Nazi of him! We can’t treat it like an invasion even though it is!

  6. Academia has turned into a bs production industry, and I don’t mean bachelor of science degree.

  7. Oklahoma GOP has closed primaries, I believe.

Oklamhoma GOP controls 80% of the legislature.

In safe districts, if you aren’t a registered republican, you have very little leverage on the election, since the election is decided in the closed primary.

  8. The Republicans, and all other parties, should select, administer, and pay for their own nomination processes.

  10. With due respect to my friend Frank, the OKLP has remained continuously on the ballot since 2016 by qualifying under the law. The law was changed, after many years of Oklahoma having arguably the most difficult ballot access law in the country, to reduce the signature requirement somewhat, reduce the ballot status retention vote percentage requirement, and to make that vote percentage requirement achievable in any statewide race and to extend recognition to two cycles. Since those reforms were implemented the OKLP has been on the ballot and remained so without reliance upon the courts. Indeed, the only instance when the OKLP was placed on the ballot by court order was in 1984 when the signature requirement and time period was challenged and the state failed to meet a deadline to submit their brief to argue that the OKLP should not be recognized.
