On May 1, the Florida legislature passed CS/HB 1205. It says that no one may circulate an initiative petition to more than five voters plus family member voters who live with the circulator, unless the circulator has taken a two-hour on-line course. See this story.
It also imposes fines of $2,500 on anyone who circulates but who doesn’t submit the petitions within ten days after they had been signed.
They should eliminate the exception. Also, $2500 is weak. Life in prison without the possibility of parole or better yet death by firing squad would be more appropriate.
I agree, the penalties and restrictions should be far more severe.
Has a single state got rid of the initiative power in recent years? (besides Mississippi – for technical reasons)
If not, how many states can only get rid of the initiative power through an initiative (to amend the state constitution)?
Many have made it more difficult, which is smart.

Terrible new law. Hopefully there will be lawsuits against it.
The only thing terrible about it is it doesn’t go nearly far enough, but you have to start somewhere.
