On May 8, the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, and the Clerk of the State House, filed this brief in Libby v Fecteau, 24A1051. This case arose when the House disciplined Representative Laurel D. Libby for having posted on social media a picture of a transgender high school student. Her post included the student’s name. The House said that Libby must remove the social media posting and apologize for having posted it, but she refused, so the House ruled that she cannot vote until the end of the session, or until she changes her mind. Libby then sued, but lost in the lower federal courts.
Here is what I believe to be the photo she posted. Apparently, Libby also wrote the student’s first name.

Another Republican legislator was quoted as saying: “My colleague made an error in judgment by posting images of a minor to push a policy agenda. This was reprehensible.”
Regardless, if some freak were to physically assault that athlete and say that they were inspired by Ms. Libby, it’s still not the legislator’s fault. Furthermore, a Facebook post does not interefere with legislative proceedings. Therefore, the Maine Legislature is in error.

“2 lawsuits challenging Wisconsin’s congressional map filed with state Supreme Court”

Two lawsuits have been filed asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to declare the state’s congressional map unconstitutional ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The lawsuits come roughly a month after liberals retained their majority on the court with the election of Dane County Judge Susan Crawford. They also come about a year-and-a-half after liberal justices struck down Wisconsin’s political maps for the state Senate and Assembly.
