Please recall that in the scenario the child didn’t choose to trespass, but was brought to the property by a kidnapper. It’s true that it would take the police some time to arrive, but you have your own guns and ammo and the means to throw the criminal, the kid, both, or neither out in the snow, almost certainly to die.
The criminal, fearing an even worse death than freezing, already fled, or perhaps died – it doesn’t matter for our purpose here, since neither of us are defending the kidnapper/trespasser/rapist. But we still have the kid, who did not choose to trespass on your property, but is on your property uninvited nevertheless. The police can’t come, but you have guns and ammo and the child does not. The kid won’t discernibly reduce your own chances of surviving the winter, or that of anyone in your household, if you let her stay.
That’s the extreme case of conception by rape.
In the far more common case, you invited the kid, or at least knew his parents would bring him along, and knew the storm was coming, or at least knew there was a nontrivial chance it would come. That’s conception by a woman who’s a willing partner in the sex act leading to conception but later decides to abort.

Rightly or wrongly, many people take their cues as to what is moral from what is legal. In a society where chattel slavery was legal, many people disagreed over whether it was immoral or not. Sometimes the laws take shape before a moral near-consensus, sometimes after, but it’s an interdependent process.

But I’m fairly sure that there should not exist a legal right to pull the plug merely because someone can’t feed him or herself and for no other reason. This seems to presume humans are not part of nature, a premise I reject. Animals have adapted themselves to us in various ways. We’ve adapted economically, socially, and evolutionists would say biologically to the various ways we use animals. All that being said, as I said initially – I’m more sympathetic that at least higher level evolved species should have a right to life than I do to the argument that human fetuses who don’t threaten their mother’s life should not.

You are completely correct, and I apologize for the poor illustration of my point which was that we all have to feed off others, at least at times. Sometimes who we feed off can be exchanged quickly, so no one is involuntarily trapped into feeding or housing anyone else for very long and no one is starved or kicked out in the cold just because there’s no one who feels like doing it at that very exact moment.
I guess the question here is how long is too long to have such an expectation as a matter of right. I don’t necessarily have a perfect answer, either. If you think that you do, please explain what it is and how you derive it.

But, liberty can be restored, whereas life can’t be. I think that’s why we generally consider the death penalty to be a more severe punishment than prison – even more severe than life in prison without the possibility of parole, since even that can be overturned on appeal if new evidence comes to light. The death penalty, once carried out, can only be overturned symbolically – it’s not humanly possible to actually bring someone back from the dead.
If one is imprisoned, the time served can’t be returned either, but the remainder of the sentence can be commuted or pardoned or otherwise foregone if the prisoner is exonerated.
As far as I know that addresses all the remaining loose ends in our discussion. I apologize that it took me a few days to put my reply together, and hope you’ll find the time to reply in turn, although I won’t be either surprised or cross if you do not. I wonder if this isn’t yet another call for formation of a Libertarian Caucus within the Republican Party? A guy named Eric Rittberg argued for such (“Libertarian Republicans”) about 40 years ago (as did Clifford Thies, if I remember correctly) but not enough Libertarians took the opportunity. It’s been widely believed that only a minority of committed libertarians ever joined the LP, so perhaps a Lib Caucus within the GOP, with a sympathetic Trump, could do far more for liberty than a wounded LP can?”
My reply, currently awaiting consideration for publication there:
Mr. Rittberg, aka Mr. Dondero, and Mr. Thies, among others, did more than merely argue for it – they went ahead and did it. That group is known as the Republican Liberty Caucus (rlc.org).
There are also other Republican cauci which are arguably libertarian, depending on how broadly you define libertarian – Republican Freedom Caucus, for example. I don’t care to argue over how broadly libertarian should be defined – been there, done that, found it to be a bottomless pit and endless sinkhole of time and energy.
There are also many organizations which, while not technically partisan, tend to lean both Republican when it comes to party and libertarian(ish) when it comes to policy – Campaign for Liberty, Young Americans for Liberty, Mises Institute (not Caucus), the entire Koch policy network with its myriad of organizations (“Kochtopus”), Citizens Against Government Waste, and many others. In this speech, Mrs. Padgett (nee McArdle) refers to all of these collectively as the Freedom Fest conservatarian movement, which seems to me to be at least approximately accurate, to whatever extent I either have or wish to express an opinion about such things.
I did not see Mrs. Padgett call for the dissolution of the libertarian party per se, much less express the notion that if it did so it would greatly expand the size and effectiveness of a formally organized caucus within one other specific party.
Rather, she called for it to continue to run candidates of its own, who would then suspend their campaigns, or withdraw from the ballot when and where allowed to, and endorse the major party candidate who promises them the best deal, regardless of whether that’s the Republican, Democrat, or perhaps some independent or other party candidate perceived to have a real chance to win.
There’s arguments for and against such a strategy. To me, the most obvious argument against is that, even if Mr. Trump did in fact keep all his promises to her, politicians are famous for making and breaking promises in general. There are other arguments both for and against such a position. Regardless of which ones you wish to make or find plausible, I think it’s useful to understand what her argument in fact is, and it’s not to dissolve the LP and issue an unenforceable diktat herding big L supporters into the RLC.
We can now circle back around to Mr. Dondero-Rittberg, who has in fact made such arguments himself subsequent to parting ways with Dr. Ron Paul after serving as his congressional travel aide for a number of years. After this, Mr. Rittberg-Dondero intermittently returned to the Libertarian Party, primarily but not exclusively as a for profit ballot access contractor but also in other ways, such as convincing 2008 libertarian VP nominee Wayne Root to temporarily switch to the Libertarians, etc.
If I recall correctly, Mr. Dondero’s argument at the time was that the Libertarian Party should be sort of like a national version of the Conservative Party of New York (or, I suppose, the right wing mirror image of the Working Families Party, which is somewhat of a national party now). It’s been a number of years since I’ve heard or seen Mr. Rittberg, so I don’t know if he still advances those same arguments.
The main (or most obvious to me) weakness of this strategy is that it works most effectively in fusion States , which are few in number.
Another example used by Mr. Dondero and Mr. Root, among others, is the TEA Party (movement of the late 2000s decade and early 2010s), which I think it’s fair to say has been absorbed into the MAGA Movement today. However, despite the name, the TEA Party (movement) was/is a movement, not a balloted political party per se. The arguments advanced back then by Mr. Rittberg, Mr. Root and others, that the Libertarian Party had the opportunity to fill the niche which the TEA Party (movement) ended up filling, ignores this difference.

Phillies has been a pest for decades. He actually narced in Harry Browne to the feds for violating FEC rules in 2000. He is widely known and disliked among active libertarian party members. He usually runs for top level offices like the presidential nomination or party chair or treasurer and gets about 5% of delegate votes after spending more time and money to run than any other candidate.
He doesn’t disclose how or why he became a libertarian. Maybe he’s a fed himself who’s paid to spy on and disrupt the party . For decades he’s collected and published confidential information to cast LP leadership in negative light and exacerbate infighting. He does this regardless of which faction is in control, but especially whenever they start gathering any kind of steam.
He has probably attended more LNC meetings as a non member than anyone else ever. When he’s not there himself he collects reports from those who were (or watches them on video now that that’s an option). If he’s not a fed he might well be a confidential informant.
Maybe he’s being blackmailed, or maybe he just really hates libertarians and only joined in order to disrupt them as much as possible.
Speaking of arrogant in 2007 he decided way ahead of time he would be the likely presidential nominee months before any of the top vote getters for that nomination were running and did his own libertarian presidential petition in New Hampshire. NH allows that so they actually had two LP presidential candidates on the ballot in 2008 splitting the already tiny LP vote, with Phillies being one due to his ego and having no better use for his time and money.
Another example of what he does is when the Massachusetts LP made some headway in the 1990s and early 2000s he nit picked and pestered them until their progress halted and reversed and many people quit being involved because of him. It’s just what he does and always did in the LP.
You’ll also find him hogging the microphone at every convention. His voice sounds like nails on a chalk board. He lives alone and has never married, had children, or had a live in or publicly disclosed partner. He doesn’t disclose his sexual orientation or religion or lack thereof either.
Hopefully, the Libertarian Party will continue the progress it has started under McArdle, and these fake libertarians will self purge like Knapp already has yet again.
In due time they can also be removed for disloyalty like the New Hampshire party did to CIA Nick Tsarwark. Eventually maybe they’ll even start enforcing their membership oath and remove all the derp state supporters who insist on hanging on.
Phillies is something else altogether – an arrogant pedantic totalitarian disguised impossibly as a libertarian. A literal wolf in sheep’s clothing, driven by nothing except endless need to control others, and forced to exercise his control freak totalitarianism in an obscure corner of the internet.
Why would a totalitarian pretend to be a libertarian ? For one, because the libertarians are so starved for allies, they’ll take literally anyone proclaiming himself to be one, no matter how implausibly. The profanity is indeed most unprofessional and disturbing. Such degenerate language should not be permitted in public, much less in the leadership of a party. Shame on them.
It’s certainly no surprise that a party built on the evil ideology of unchecked capitalist greed and unrestrained moral, social, and cultural degeneracy of any and all kinds has fallen into financial bankruptcy. At independent political report, there various supporters are exchanging (as yet unproven) allegations of mismanagement and embezzlement against their various leaders, current as well as former. While it’s no concern of mine which of them if any are guilty, it’s likewise no surprise if some of them are.
This is yet another example of why the evil libertarian ideology must be rejected in all its aspects – social as well as economic. What your country most desperately lacks is a moral party which is the opposite of the libertarians across the board on social and economic issues, standing for economic fairness and traditional family values very strongly enforced by government.
If there is any area to agree with libertarians about, it’s only on a noninterventionist foreign policy, mainly because your country is not a positive force by any means on the world stage.

Of course, a fetus depends on his mother to survive; so does a newborn.
Abortion is not killing in self defense or punishment for crime. Even when the child’s father is a rapist, that’s not the child’s fault. In most cases, however, the mother helped conceive the child willingly or negligently. If you invite guests knowing a snowstorm that will block all roads out for the next six or nine months is coming or plausible, you have a duty not to throw them out in the snow to die. Even if a kidnapper smuggles a child onto your property ahead of such a storm without your knowledge or permission, at the very least such a duty exists as to the innocent child, even if not to the criminal. The child didn’t choose to trespass on your property.
The only time it’s even a question is when there are insufficient provisions for you and the child to both survive, and in the case where it’s your own child, we generally don’t think well of mothers who save themselves at the expense of their children. Most mothers would sacrifice their lives for their children as a matter of course.

From my vantage point, your country’s government is already far too laissez faire across the board on domestic issues (albeit far too involved in international affairs, including those far from its own borders).

The jist of my comment was that Pat Jones project of making arguments about abortion which do not rely on faith or emotion is a fool’s errand. The godless libertarians and other infidels will always tie logic into Gordian slipknots, no matter how implausible, to justify their sinful desires and irresponsibility or bloodlust.

There is nothing approaching even Nielsen ratings’ far from perfect ability to gauge the relative popularity of television programs in the 20th century nowadays. Attempts are still being made, of all sorts, including the archaic ones like the Nielsen ratings to this day, but they’re nothing but garbage noise now.
