Tomorrow (Thursday, July 17, 2025), RankMIVote will start circulating a citizens initiative petition to amend the Constitution of Michigan to adopt Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for some offices in certain elections in Michigan. If the petition effort gathers at least 446,198 valid signatures of Michigan registered voters, the question of adoption of RCV will be on the ballot in November 2026.
The legal petitioning period is 180 days, and the 180th day of the petitioning period will be Monday, January 12, 2026. It is the goal of RankMIVote that the petition drive be completed with an entirely volunteer effort. The anti-gerrymandering ballot question that was approved with 61% of the vote in Michigan in November 2018 was placed on the ballot with an all volunteer petitioning effort.
The initiative calls for RCV to be used in Major Party primaries for President, Governor, US Senate, and US House. In General Elections, RCV would be used for those offices, plus Attorney General and Secretary of State. State House and State Senate elections are not included in this initiative.
It also calls for RCV to be used with straight-ticket voting, whereby voters can rank parties, which they carry down the ballot. It would also allow expansion of RCV through local adoption and by acts of the state legislature.
According to the rankmivote.org website, this initiative would also require Michigan government to inform voters of all important updates on how or where to vote, ensure that voters in line at the time of poll closure can vote, allow all voters to use paper ballots in all elections, and move primaries from August to at least June, and possibly earlier in the year.
The RankMiVote organization has been preparing for this petition drive for years. I will be involved in this effort as a volunteer petitioner and have attended several online and in-person meetings in the run up to July 17. This appears to me to be a very well organized effort.

Or better yet just get rid of that process and let legislators legislate. Anything that makes voting and elections more complicated is bad. Anything that makes them simpler is good. Fewer and fewer people know how to read and write all the time, which is why voice vote or standing count need to be implemented.

Rotten communist vomit (Rcv) makes elections, vote counting, and voting more complicated. You get undervotes and overvotes and people who feel intimidated because there are too many candidates for them to try to figure out a rank order or how they feel about them or remember which is which. Then the counting is more complicated, takes longer, and opens up more opportunities for fraud and communism.

True, voting and elections need to be a lot simpler, with a lot fewer ppl allowed to vote. I like the standing count idea.

When I was growing up we had good sensible ways of limiting who all was allowed to vote, such as poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, etc.
We need to go back to those times, when the voting age was 21, and better yet to my grandparents time before women were allowed to vote.

Instead of passing more laws, how about actually getting serious about enforcing the existing ones already on the books? We need a lot more resources for law enforcement, and a lot more respect for law enforcement officers.
Every county should have a dozen Alligator Alcatrazes and we need Sheriff’s Posse patrols everywhere. You shouldn’t have to drive more than a few miles down a country road before seeing prisoners in shackles picking up trash by the side of the road, breaking rocks, etc. Prisons need to be a lot more like medieval dungeons and a lot less like adult day care camps where they are the method to deal with crime, but better yet go back to time tested punishments like public executions as the default punishment for felonies, and things like public corporal punishment, deportation / exile, loss of citizenship even for native born citizens, convict leasing, and other such great old ideas that need to be brought back for misdemeanors.
Instead of getting “free” government checks (or nowadays electronic deposits) to be idle, breed ever more idiots, use and sell dope, commit crimes, vandalize property, joyride in stolen vehicles, play video games etc, bring back Victorian poorhouses/workhouses for society’s dregs.
And don’t forget the insane asylums. Bring back large scale involuntary commitment instead of having hordes of lunatics and untreated mental patients self medicating and running loose as vagrants all over the place. They don’t need to be nice or humane places – their sole function should be to keep the two legged equivalent of rabid dogs from biting innocent people.

There is absolutely nothing scientific about so called “political science.” Even the hard sciences are way too politicized in practice. Inexact and social sciences, far more so. By the time you get to “polisci” it’s zero percent science and one hundred percent political.
Democracy, especially unchecked democracy, can be and often is every bit as tyrannical as any monarch or oligarchy, past or present.
The incentive structures of democracy incentivize short term thinking, ill thought out solutions, false political promises, cynical and or genuinely stupid and ignorant emotional appeals to poorly educated idiots, rent seeking, media sensationalism, lazy/unproductive/unscrupulous people to both take advantage of and outbreed/outvote those who woke hard and smart, save and invest, and make sacrifices and take calculated risk to benefit both themselves and others – etc.
In short for some people to take advantage of others, particularly those in the minority of people who excel above the rest in various ways. Why make the sacrifices to do so when you can just vote yourself and others who didn’t and don’t the fruits of the efforts of those who did and do instead?
Over time, people learn those lessons, and move on the margins – out of the jurisdiction, or away from being productive and law abiding.
There’s nothing about democracy that incentizes peace, long term prosperity, maintaining civil liberties, limiting government, etc.

Whenever government is “doing something” about any given problem, real or imagined , it makes sensationalist media happy and politicians popular. As a result, laws, taxes, and regulations multiply and whole classes of bureaucrats, government contractors, government employees, government connected businesses and their employees, welfare recipients of various types, etc become entrenched, grow and multiply.
There’s very little to no real accountability , and especially long term, under democracy.
