The initiative in 2020 passed 50.55% to 49.45%.
The referendum in 2024 failed 49.89% to 50.11%
The referendum in 2024 was apparently an amateur effort and outspent by opponents. The 2026 effort has the backing of Republican Party. It also proposes eliminating the ban on so-called “dark money” from out-of-state interests. The 2020 initiative had used the sizzle of the dark-money ban to gain support for Top-4. The 2026 effort may be using the sizzle of reinstituting segregated primaries to permit dark money.

The people voted twice in the last 6 years. Three votes in 6 years on the same subject sounds excessive. Some initiative states limit how often a subject can come up for a vote. I’m not a fan of the initiative process at all, but while it exists, I think that’s a very reasonable rule.
I don’t think narrow election results are a good excuse to keep voting over and over about the same question. Imagine if an issue you support wins, and wins again, both times narrowly. Wouldn’t you say “enough already” when it comes to voting about it repeatedly?
For those of you who support the repeal, suppose it passes, should we have a fourth and fifth vote? When is enough enough?
