New Mexico Libertarian Party is Back on Ballot for 2010, 2012

The New Mexico Secretary of State has validated the Libertarian Party’s ballot access petition. The party is now considered ballot-qualified for both 2010 and 2012.

However, New Mexico law treats a qualified party that nominates by convention badly. Even though the party is ballot-qualified, it must still submit a separate petition for each of its nominees. The only exception is that presidential nominees don’t need a petition.

A similar law in Maryland was invalidated in 2003, so New Mexico is the only state that requires one petition to qualify a party, and then separate petitions for each of the party’s nominees (a nominee is someone who has already been nominated; this type of petition should not be confused with a petition to place a candidate on a party’s own primary ballot).

The Libertarian Party now is on the statewide ballot in 2010 in 31 states. Exactly four years ago it was on in 28.

  1. Right on New Mexico LP.
Take the fight to the streets, the alleys, homes, meeting rooms, LP events, the media, and take it to those elected officials who are suppose to “represent” us.
    More choices is good.
How would we like it if we could only have one brand of car to drive? Hmmm, think we are heading for that anyway. Thank you Ford, for no bailouts.

  2. Kudos to the LP! I predict that by 2020 it will be normal for state legislatures and the House of Reps to consist of members of at least 4 parties. In a more ideal America, the LP and the Constitution Party would be the two largest parties.

  3. I collected a full THIRD of those 2010 signatures to get the LP on the New Mexico ballot, in a period of about a month (2,633 raw), with high validity. This despite the fact that numerous people in the LP said I couldn’t do it! (You know who you are.)

Yes, I saw Gary’s work in New Mexico this go around and it was excellent as usual. This further illustrates that his detractors are full of more hot air than the balloons at the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Alburquerque.

Also, Gary recently turned in a batch of signatures in California where the validity was 100%. In other words, a validity check was run on the signatures and none of the signatures were found to be invalid. Anyone who done any petitioning knows that this is not an easy thing to achieve. It was a small batch of sigantures, but still, 100% validity on even a small batch of signatures is quite impressive.
