On March 3, the Montana House held a second reading vote on HB 521, the bill to convert Montana judicial elections to partisan elections. The bill only got 45 “yes” votes, and got 54 “no” votes, so it is almost certainly dead. Thanks to Mike Fellows for the news.

Since those who run for office in judicial election do not talk about issues, most voters know nothing about Judge candidates. This bill wouldn’t help that much either. But there are candidates that would have liked to hop on the Republican wave that hit in 2010. How many Democrats are switching parties to get elected?
