Rob Richie has this article in the Huffington Post, showing that media assumptions that most of the Republican presidential primaries have been assigning delegates proportionately is not true. The article present hypothetical delegate counts so far if the voting were proportional in all Republican presidential primaries. The article has other insights as well, about the role of money, and whether or not the Republican Party is being damaged by having a vigorous contest for its nomination.

Alaska: 2.6% in Republican-only caucus
Idaho: 4.1% in Republican-only caucus
Virginia: 4.6% in Republican-only primary
Mass.: 10.8% in Republican-Democratic primary
Paul did pretty good in Idaho for a state with a large turnout(for a caucus) and, more importantly, a large Mormon population. Idaho is bloody minded enough (Perot did well there too)to be a great place for experimentation for Approval Voting and PR for some local governments and one house of the state legislature.

The article basically raises the issue of some “proportional” states actually allocating delegates by congressional district. This has been accurately reported by the media in their delegate counts since South Carolina, it’s just that it gets confusing when they say a state is “proportional” and use that term to include truly proportional states (like New Hampshire) and CD-proportional states (like SC and Michigan).
Also I wish people would do some actual research before statements like these about Barack Obama: “the nation’s first racial minority to be a major party nominee.” False. Charles Curtis was an American Indian who served as Vice President in the 20’s. Minority shouldn’t be synonymous with black.

When you see Ron Paul rallies jammed with thousands of people and Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney with only a few hundred attendees, you start to wonder. Looking at the Libertarian party with Gary Johnson at the helm you see a tremendous upsurge in popularity. Disaffected Republicans and dissatisfied Democrats are flocking to the LP but will it be enough to allow Gary Johnson to debate with the big two? Only time will tell.
