Albany Times-Union Editorializes in Favor of More Than Two Candidates in New York General Election Gubernatorial Debates

The Albany Times-Union has this editorial, saying that Howie Hawkins, Green Party candidate for Governor of New York, should be allowed to debate Andrew Cuomo and the Republican nominee for Governor of New York, Rob Astorino. The editorial writer seems to feel that no one else should be allowed into the debate, although it is premature to make that determination until everyone knows who is on the ballot. The petition for unqualified party nominees is not due until August 5.

  1. Perhaps since Cuomo is a prohibitive favorite to win he should only field questions from a carefully selected panel of friendly journalists. Why bother with a GOP loser?

  2. The article actually says the Republican candidate is openly opposed to anything but a two-candidated debate. Cuomo, and his people, won’t comment yet. The last time of course they wanted a “multi-party debate” and got one.

  3. For a debate with more than two candidates to happen this year there’s really going to have to be a public outcry. I hope it happens.

  4. The Times Union argues that only current ballot status parties should be allowed to debate. That would mean only 3 men on the stage. Their reasoning is more than a little undemocratic, but that’s typical of the Times Union.
