On September 24, Senator John McCain suggested that the first presidential debate (set for Friday, September 26) be postponed until Congress has dealt with the fiscal emergency. See this story. Thanks to Rick Hasen’s ElectionLawBlog for the link.

Wow! Now’s a good time for all the Barr, Nader, Baldwin & McKinney supporters to put the pressure on the CPD!
I would be great if Barr could place ads in Am stations being that it is cost effective and talk about opposing bailouts.
I am a fan of McCain, but this is pathetic by him and his campaign.
actually Brad you should like this move if you are a McCain fan. When McCain used the same strategy as Hurricane Gustav approaced to cancel the Republican Convention , he gained a lot of sympathy votes from the public and the media. This strategy is the same to show the American people he is a Maverick and puts America first and partisan politics second. But you must realize or understand that it’s all a show, a chess match, put forth to gain votes. If you truly are a McCain fan you would be in favor of this strategy. McCain is always one step ahead of Obama, has to be as the underdog. I do urge you to see through this pony show and vote Third Party. Any Third Party vote is better than McBama. I personally will be voting for Bob Barr. I say this for full disclosure
Bob Barr’s campaign is offering the candidate as a substitute for John McCain if he bows out of Friday’s debate.

I’m surprised McCain didn’t suggest a date late in November, or mid December!
I SAY LET EVERY CANDIDATE ON THE BALLOT IN 30 STATES DEBATE. IF THEIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE BIG PARTIES LET THE OTHER CANDIDATES HAVE A SEPERATE DEBATE.
Since the networks must have all ready allotted the time why not invite Barr, Nader, McKinney, and Baldwin. Oops wouldn’t want people to here real solutions.
Time to accept a scripted Presidential “debate” yet again?
Brought to you by your “good friends” on Wall Street.
No USA Main Street Paul or Nader,
nor Cynthia McKinney…
McKinney has also offered to stand in for McCain.
Jonathan, I am aware of the political theater, and associated benefit, that McCain (or his campaign team’s) is putting on by potentially delaying/postponing/cancelling the debate. It’s just not a McCain move. It’s just a p***y move and his integrity is taking a hit with every move designed by his Karl Rovian campaign team. I live in Texas which is not in play due to the BS electoral college. I’ll be voting Barr or Nader.
When politicians move to short-circuit or suspend the political process because of some “crisis” or another the American people better think through the consequences of that. The implications are actually quite frightening.
I like the concept of a Star Search style of 3rd party debates. Hold a series of 3rd party debates and let the audience vote off one candidate at the end of each debate. Let the winner of the series debate McCane and Obama.
