North Carolina is one of a handful of states in which no televised gubernatorial or U.S. Senatorial debate has ever included a minor party or independent candidate, debating both his or her major party opponents.
Earlier this year, the University of North Carolina’s TV station, WUNC, sponsored gubernatorial debates and invited the only ballot-listed minor party candidate, Michael Munger, to participate. But the Democratic nominee, Beverly Perdue, refused to participate. WUNC went ahead and held debates on September 24 and October 8 that included only Munger and the Republican nominee, Patrick McCrory.
Now, Perdue has finally agreed to participate in a 3-way debate, which will be held October 15 at 7 p.m. That debate is sponsored by several TV stations and the Charlotte League of Women Voters. Thanks to Brian Irving for this news.
Great job to the people of North Carolina. Force their hand into the debate, they look like cowards when they won’t allow a minor party candidate into the debate.
Perdue got it handed to her. Really showed her true colors too! Nice nonspecific political jargon. Hopefully the people will see right through her.
