California Minor Parties Ask State Appeals Court to Take Note of Low Voter Turnout in 2014

Attorneys for the Libertarian, Peace & Freedom, and Green Parties have asked the California State Court of Appeals to take judicial notice of the Secretary of State’s Statement of Votes for the November 2014 election. That document says the turnout in November 2014 was substantially lower than in any other regularly-scheduled California general election in history. The submission was made in the lawsuit Rubin v Bowen, which challenges the top-two primary on voting rights grounds. The State Court of Appeals will hear the case on January 15, 2015, in San Francisco.

California Minor Parties Ask State Appeals Court to Take Note of Low Voter Turnout in 2014 — 6 Comments

  1. I don’t see the American Independent Party leaders listed, and it is not surprise. It appears they don’t care if the party has the opportunity to run candidates under the old system ever again. Makes one wonder if there isn’t another side to this story.

Any AIP leaders out there want to chime in?

  2. In 2010, Washington had the highest turnout at a midterm election since 18-year old began to vote.

  3. According to the Secretary of State of Washington’s web page, the percentage of the registered voters who voted in November 2014 was 54.16%. The percentage of registered voters who voted in November 2010 was 71.24%. The percentage in 2006 was 64.55%.

You apparently credit the high turnout in 2010 to top-two, but I credit it to the fact that 2010 was the first election in which all registered voters received a ballot in the postal mail automatically. If top-two were responsible for increasing turnout in Washington state, why was it so low in 2014?

  4. How many old folks passed away ???

How many Elephants have gotten OUT of the CA Soviet Socialist Republic ???

How many illegal INVADERS in CA ???

How many CA folks taking drugs and could not care less about ANY govt stuff ???

  5. No statewide races in 2014. Washington conducts its gubernatorial and presidential elections in the same year, so in the midterms, the only statewide partisan election is the US senatorial election.

Every 3rd midterm (12 years) there is no senate race.

If you look at the turnout for 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, it is without fail less than for the midterm election on either side.

Votes cast were up 20.5% statewide 2006 to 2010. Votes cast in King County were up 19.5%. Votes cast in Pierce County were up 24.3%. These were the only counties with in-person voting in 2006 (and they may have sent a ballot to every registered voter in 2006).

Votes cast statewide, excluding King and Pierce were up 20.4%. So perhaps, 0.01% or a couple of hundred extra votes were due to the full VBM election.

  6. “How many Elephants have gotten OUT of the CA Soviet Socialist Republic ???”

Demo Rep: I don’t support the California Republican Party. But what about that party is “Soviet Socialist Republic?” If anything, it is attempting to be a modern day version of Herbert Hoover and Dwight Eisenhower. While neither of these men were nationalists, they certainly were not “Soviet Socialist.”

What makes a person a “Soviet Socialist?”
